How to plan sheet cuts

How to Use This Tool

  1. Set Board Size: Enter the real sheet size you have, such as 2440 x 1220 mm or 96 x 48 in.
  2. Configure Settings: Add the saw kerf and choose a grain direction before adding parts.
  3. Input Parts: Add each rectangular part. Use quantity when several parts share the same size.

What the layout means

The optimizer uses guillotine-style rectangular cuts. Each cut runs straight from one edge of the remaining rectangle to the opposite edge.

This is useful for table saws and panel saws. It is not CNC nesting, and it does not handle L-shaped or curved parts.

Common mistakes and tips

  • Include kerf: A cut removes material. If you leave kerf at 0, the plan can look tighter than the real sheet.
  • Check grain before rotating: For visible plywood or veneer, rotation may change how the face grain runs on the finished part.
  • Use the result as a plan, not a proof: Fast cutting optimizers use heuristics. Try a different board size or rotation setting when waste looks high.

What is 'Kerf'?

Kerf is the width of material removed by a cut. Measure your blade or use the blade maker's listed kerf when accuracy matters.

Why can't I place L-shaped parts?

This tool is optimized for rectangular panels. Complex shapes like L-bends require CNC nesting.

Does grain direction matter?

Yes. Use grain direction for parts where the visible face grain or strength direction must stay consistent.
